Samples

For your review - and either pleasure or displeasure, depending on your tastes - are some samples of my work, in a variety of formats: MP3, MIDI, or PDF. You may download the files in question if you right-click their links.

So, see below!

  • Recordings

The MP3's here are live recordings from performances of my work. For ease of access, they are arranged in reverse chronological order.

I have put up all the recordings I have, that are appropriate; as I get more recordings, you will find them here.

String Quartet no. 4 (2006) (in three movements)

Nathan Olson / Sarah McLervey / Wesley Collins / Martin Torch-Ishii

    25.XI.2006; Shaker Heights, OH

    14'58; 6.9MB

A spirited, generally light-hearted work in three movements, this was performed by an excellent student quartet from the Cleveland Institute of Music in a recital at a private residence.

    Have a listen, citizen.

Sonata for Violoncello & Piano (2003; rev. 2005) (in three movements)

Nicholas Dinnerstein, 'cello; Mikko Taylor, piano

    29.XI.2005; New York, NY

    15'27; 8.8MB

Originally a four-movement suite, I retained the outer movements (a quirky first movement and an exciting rondo-finale) and inserted a rather bleak slow movement to make a better-balanced and more mature work. My friend Nick (who currently lives in Boston and is an excellent cellist; see his website) was kind enough to join me in performing it at Mannes College of Music.

    Try, citizen, this one.

    Sesquipedalia (2002-2003) (for unaccompanied 'cello)

    Nicholas Dinnerstein, 'cello

    8.V.2003; New York, NY

    16'16; 9.3MB

A 'first' on numerous fronts for me (first piece in college; first work for unaccompanied strings; etc.), this was also the first work I had the pleasure of doing with my friend Nick. It's a one-movement piece with four distinct episodes. I wrote it conscientiously, but it's still fiendishly difficult at some points; Nick did a HEROIC job performing it!

Here, citizen, is something to consider.

Four Movements for Piano and Strings (2001-2002) (III. Intermezzo; IV. Fugue)

    Hackley Orchestra/Uchino/Webb-Orenstein/Taylor/Morgovsky, cond.

    27.V.2002; Tarrytown, NY

    8'49; 8.1MB

This was one of the last projects I completed while in high school, and was one of my last performances in high school. The group was lacking in personnel and rehearsal time; however, in return for a lot of technical problems the piece got a VERY spirited performance. So, it got the plusses and minuses inherent to high school groups - but I ultimately put it into the 'positive' column.

    Let this, citizen, be heard.

  • Computer renditions

MIDI rarely does a piece justice, but it is a low-stress way to get the general idea across; the files are very small, after all! A good sound card, with MIDI, makes a world of difference; it could even sound halfway decent!

These are selections from a considerably larger body of work, arranged in chronological order - but opposite from the recordings. That is, more recent works will appear at the bottom.

If you'd like to hear something else via MIDI, there's quite a bit more where this came from; I'll gladly generate more upon request.

Please note that MIDI renditions can be imperfect; some of these have a tendency to confuse the textures for string instruments. Please let me know if anything of that sort happens, and I shall endeavor to fix it.

Festive Fragments (2004) (clips from my defunct Symphony n. 2)

    I. ~6' listen

    II. ~4' listen

    III. ~6' listen

Chaos & Oblivion (2005) (for large symphony orchestra)

    duration 15'-20' listen

    String Quartet n. 3 (2006)

'Bolshoi' version - 20'-25' (in five movements; no pause) listen

String Quartet n. 5 (2006-2007) (in one movement; five episodes)

    duration 25'-30' listen

Sonata for Violin & Piano (2006-2008) (in one movement)

    duration 12'-16' listen

String Quartet n. 6 (2008) (in one movement)

    duration ~12' listen

  • Scores

For those of you who are content just to read through a score without the aid of recordings, I offer PDF versions of various works. As with the MIDI files, there is much more where this came from.

I will post PDF scores as I submit paperwork to the U. S. Copyright Office.

PLEASE NOTE: My notation software is Sibelius; therefore, if you have Sibelius (version 3 or later) I could send you the original files for viewing or playback - and we could skip all this PDF or MIDI business. Contact me and it can be arranged.
