Practicalities

Now, citizens, to get into the most awkward of realms -- that of filthy lucre.

Generally speaking, I am not very particular about performances of my music. The more people that hear it, the happier I am! I'm not looking to make a buck from simple interest in my music --but if a recording is yielded, I would like a copy.

My real profit-seeking is under the following circumstances:

  • where I am put to actual work in creating something new
  • wherein my music is used commercially (especially in film, television, or theatre)

More specific remarks follow.

  • Existing works

Let's face it: there's no money in printed scores. And, frankly, I don't see anything wrong with that.

So, here's the deal: you can have scores and parts and whatever you'd like from me; what I ask, in return, is for you to cover the costs associated with getting it to you. A few options:

    1. e-mail. Free, all around. You print and bind. *.pdf or *.sib files.
    2. printed, unbound. Printing costs, plus postage.
    3. printed & bound. Printing and binding costs, plus postage.

There's no set formula about how much it would cost, but some general forecasts follow:

    • Printing: 5-10 cents per page should cost 5-10 cents per page.
    • Binding: 3-8 dollars per binding. Please take note in cases of scores and parts!
    • Shipping: Rarely less than 4 dollars, and very possibly more; depends on weight and expediency.
    • Local pick-up is fine.

One request, although not a requirement: I would greatly appreciate a copy of any recordings of my music that may emerge from your interest. This would be for personal archiving, and possible for inclusion on this website.

In any case, I welcome all inquiries -- and am glad to assist you.

  • New works

Here's where it gets to be more fascinating.

As I have stated elsewhere, I am willing and eager to write new works for whatever your needs may be. However, there is no formula I can give you to explain the pricing. Some general principles, however, may prove helpful:

    • Duration. Longer pieces are more work.
    • Tempo. Faster pieces are more work per period of objective time.
    • Instrumentation. All other things being equal, solo pieces are much less work than, say, orchestral music!
    • Lyrics. Lyrics are more work to set. Ask about languages other than English, and about any copyright issues.
    • Deadline. How soon do you need it? That will affect the pace at which I can work.
    • Performers. If you do not have performers, I may be willing to seek and sub-contract as necessary.
    • Recordings. Same as with performers, but with recording services.

Some projects may be worth a hundred dollars or less to me. Others may be worth several thousand.Depending on the project, I may want a hundred dollars or less -- or I may want several thousand. Honestly, it depends

The short story is: let's talk! Contact me and we can work together to figure out an arrangement.
